This historical fiction story will take you on a journey through the lives of two sisters during WWII. Vianne and Isabelle live in France during the Nazi invasion. One sister is trying to hold on to her livelihood and family, while the other is doing all she can to fight to help France against the Nazis. There's love, betrayal, joy, and sorrow. This amazing book captures the story rarely told about war; the women's war.

I have to start by saying that this non-fiction book was the most difficult that I have ever read. Sometimes when we read a sad fictional story, we get sad or upset until will can tell ourselves that it isn't real. Night devastated me because it's difficult to imagine someone living through this. To know that he took out some of the worst parts when translating it hurts my heart even more. How could it possibly get more devastating than the words that pour off these pages? It does. Though it hurts to read, this book is a great reminder of what millions of people suffered during the WWII era because the ideology created by one man . I don't just recommend Night, I recommend you read the rest of the books in this non-fiction series. I implore you to read or listen to any of his works.

This definitely is a classic, but it's also science fiction. If you're thinking you don't want to read it because you've seen the movie, think again. The movie is nothing like the book. While the book follows a storyline with the same theme, it isn't at all like the book. The book is more a collections of short stories from a few different storylines. it all makes sense in the end, you just have to be patient. This is one of those books where you realize the author's thinking was ahead of his time. I, Robot will make you think of the role artificial intelligence plays into our every day lives. It makes you appreciate it at the same time it makes you question it. I did teach with this book in an eighth grade ELA class, and it brought up many great discussions. This would be a great book for a book club discussion.

Okay, I know this classic fiction book is more of a middle school read, but I just reread it with my daughter, and I realized I didn't remember much about it. It was a good feel story that has you laughing, getting mad, and crying. The younger brother, Little Arliss, is such a great character to add into this storyline. If you want to take a break from textbooks and more in depth reads, check out Old Yeller... oh, and grab some tissues.

So, this isn't my favorite fantasy fiction read, but it's worth mentioning. This is the first book in an 8 book series. The story drags out the entire time, but I think it's needed to build background information for the storyline. Maas basically used this whole book for the exposition (although there is now a prequal book). Celaena Sardothien  is an assassin in a world where magic has been band. She was rescued from a work camp by the crown prince. He wants her to participate in a competition to become the king's champion. If she, other the other competitors, lose in any of the competitions, they will be sent back from where they came. Well, either that or they are taken out by something evil. Can we throw in a love story too? Sure! Celaena has her pick of the Captain of the king's guard or the prince. It's a small part of the story in the first book, but it's there. I'm only on book 2, so I am not sure if that story line becomes more or not. If you like series and fantasy, check out Throne of Glass!
